It existed, the time before plastic wrapped everything that you shopped. When grandparents went shopping at their corner shop, the unpackaged goods went in their shopping bag. So the idea behind “OUNI”, “without” in English, isn’t new but seems somehow innovative these days. An acronym of Organic Unpackaged Natural Ingredients, OUNI has committed itself to sustainable, environmentally friendly consumption.
The cooperative founded by five ladies now has 600 members, with 200 highly active at its core. The minimum contribution is to purchase one share and provide two hours of work per week. The small organic delicatessen opened its doors in December 2016, offering a large assortment of dried and fresh fruits, vegetables, muesli, tea, coffee beans and much more – all unpackaged, naturally.
For liquid goods there are special dispensing stations where you can fill your container with oil, vinegar, wine or fruit juice. Milk and yoghurt are also available in reusable cartons. Non-consumable produce such as detergents, soaps and shampoo (including the brand Lamazuna) are also available in unpackaged form.
And because shopping is always a great opportunity to get in touch with people, you can take a seat in OUNI and enjoy a delicious slice of tart from the organic restaurant Casa Fabiana, accompanied by your favourite tea or coffee … before making your way home with your organic bread under your arm.
